Microflipping: A modest twist on the ‘flipped’ classroom

Posted on April 9th, 2014

Sam Buemi, a social-sciences instructor at Northcentral Technical College, suggests that flipped teaching should not be an all or nothing endeavor. Instead, he suggests a micro-flipped approach which “is designed to instruct both those students who have done the required assignments before class and those who have not. It blends the flipped-classroom and traditional-lecture approaches. The key to microflipping is to infuse technology (where warranted) with student engagement while intermittently peppering students with content in a lecture or conversation-style format. This gives students more autonomy in the learning process but also allows them to be guided as needed.” He concludes that “microflipping complements traditional teaching by emphasizing that class engagement and critical thinking are a central priority in helping students learn.”
