The New Media Consortium and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative recently released the 2014 Horizon Report, an annual report on current trends in technology in higher education. Key trends identified as accelerating higher education technology adoption include the integration of online, hybrid, and collaborative learning; the shift from students as consumers to creators; and the growing ubiquity of social media. Important developments in education technology include flipped classrooms, learning analytics, and gamification of learning. Significant challenges impeding technology adoption included low digital literacy of faculty, scaling teaching innovations, and competition from new models of education.
