To measure a MOOC’s value, just ask students

Owen Youngman, a professor of digital media strategy at Northwestern University who recently taught a MOOC explores what value students placed on the “statement of accomplishment” that they earned for passing his course. He states that “what MOOCs may force us to consider is whether a particular credential—a diploma—is necessary to demonstrate learning, as well as who gets to decide the relative value of the possible alternatives.” According to a post-course survey, 79 percent of the students who responded planned on listing their participation in the course on a résumé, CV, or online profile.
