The NGDLE: We are the architects

Posted on July 19th, 2017

Malcom Brown, director of the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative, reviews the next generation digital learning environment (NGDLE) white paper, released two years ago. The paper looked at the future of learning management systems and envisioned a component-based learning environment comprised of different learning tools. Brown writes, “In short, it is up to individual institutions…to decide which components best serve their learning needs and requirements.” Brown looks at what is ahead for the NGDLE, and discusses four areas that he believes should be addressed: interoperability; the IT infrastructure; learning data; and adopting “an architect’s perspective and work to design the learning environments we want and need.”
