Learner support in MOOCs: An alternative perspective

Posted on December 7th, 2013

Jenny Mackness discusses a panel session at the recent MOOC Research Initiative conference which focused on supporting learners in MOOCs. She expands upon a concept of supporting learners in terms of self-organization where “support isn’t something we do for learners, but something that we support them in doing for themselves.” She states that a key aspect would be “fostering a sense of self-reliance and this might require some ‘de-schooling’. It gets away from the ‘what can we do to support you’ approach, to ‘what can you do to support yourselves’ approach. The support is still there but it takes a different form.”
