MOOCs 2.0: Scaling one-on-one learning

Posted on September 10th, 2014

Marcel Salathé, an assistant professor at Penn State and founder of a company that provides fee-based on-demand tutoring for MOOCs, argues that the next step for MOOCs will be to increase learning by scaling one-on-one, face-to-face learning through video chat. “Getting instant help when we get stuck while learning can dramatically speed up the learning process,” Salathé said. He argues that while forums may be able to provide learning support for synchronous MOOCs, for MOOCs that are self-paced, such as those being offered by Udacity and Coursera, “the instantaneousness of a forum will be gone. If Udacity is a model, personal coaches, or TAs, will step in.”
