Re: The Last Artisans

Gregor Kiczales, a UBC professor who teaches the Introduction to Systematic Program Design MOOC, explores trends behind the unbundling of the faculty teaching role. These trends include that research into learning continues to produce new insights into how students learn, new technology can help students master new material, students have increased expectations for flexibility in how they access educational materials, and there is increasing transparency into the classroom. Kiczales states that these trends “all have the potential to make undergraduate education better, but they definitely make undergraduate teaching more complex.” Schools are responding with the growth of support organizations and by providing multiple experts, such as instructional designers, to work with. Kiczales concludes, “I’ll miss the days when I taught by instinct and ran my own show; but if the students really do learn better I’ll be proud to play a part in that.”
