Professional learning through MOOCs

Posted on April 1st, 2014

The Caledonian Academy has published findings from a study that examined the learning behaviours of professionals in the edX Fundamentals of Clinical Trials course. Their findings showed that “MOOCs may encourage passive learning, missing opportunities to exploit the knowledge and expertise diverse groups of professionals bring to the course.” The research recommendations include that MOOC designers focus “on capitalising on the diversity of MOOC participants and professionals are encouraged to link MOOC learning with their everyday work practice.” They also recommend that MOOCs “utilize the existing knowledge and experience that professional learners bring to the learning context.” The study was funded by the Gates Foundation as part of the MOOC Research Initiative.
