Seeing the data: HarvardX interactive insights

Posted on February 15th, 2014

HarvardX and MITx recently released their Insights platform to allow anyone to visually engage with data from their courses. The first release includes seven visualizations of enrollment, certification, geography, and demography that allow users to see patterns in their MOOCs. The platform takes the weekly data dumps that X-consortium partner universities get from edX, processes the raw data in a variety of ways, and automates regular updates to the visualizations, with the result of near real-time data on how the populations at HarvardX are evolving. Justin Reich, a HarvardX Research Fellow, argues that when it comes to openness for MOOCs, “the openness of data is another important dimension, and HarvardX Insights represents a great first step towards this openness.”
