In celebration of International Women’s Day, Coursera released the results of a demographic survey of over 250,000 Coursera students and estimated the fraction of Coursera’s students in each country who are female. Key findings included that Romania leads the pack in gender parity with a nearly exact 50/50 split between men and women, only 26 percent of students from India are female, and in the United States, women account for roughly 44 percent of their U.S. students. After Romania, Greece and Canada have the highest levels of gender parity. Additionally, Coursera reports that the proportion of female students in their classes has been increasing significantly over time, with the portion of users who are female rising from around 25 percent in mid-2012 to around 40 percent in early 2014.
