What role does research play in EdTech decision making?

Posted on August 24th, 2017

Fiona Hollands, a senior researcher from Teachers College at Columbia University, discusses the role of research in selecting educational technology. Hollands interviewed 52 institutional EdTech decision makers. She found that decision-makers most often consider criteria such as functionality, feasibility, and return-on investment. All participants claimed to collect data and research to inform their decisions, but did not list research about a product’s impact on student learning as one of their criteria. Hollands states, “We collectively need to find more and better ways to use research to inform decisions about acquiring and using technology in education to improve student outcomes.”
